Passage: 1 Thessalonians 5:17*

Pray without ceasing;

Questions

1. Is prayer — talking with God — becoming a more natural part of your daily experience?

2. Paul might mean one of two things here. Either, "Always be in prayer" or "When you are praying, don’t lose your focus." To which interpretation are you drawn?

Practical help

It isn’t really clear exactly what Paul means in this verse. He certainly does NOT mean that we are to always be on our knees in conscious prayer to God. Otherwise, we could never work, eat, talk with each other, and do all the things that normal life requires.

What he almost certainly DOES mean, though, is that we are to always maintain a mental and spiritual posture in which prayer is appropriate. We are to never be that far from zipping a PrayerGram off to God. We should be ready to pray at the drop of a hat. Spiritual Minutemen who are quick with a prayer.

Christians who struggle with porn often struggle with the idea that God is always with them, closer to them than their own thoughts, always accessible through prayer. And yet, that is the truth. (By the way, if you are not a Christian and want to find out how to establish a relationship with God through faith in Jesus, click here).

Prayer protects against sin. It is impossible to be truly praying to God AND to be engaged in sinful behavior at the same time. If you and I want victory over the temptation to lust over pornographic images on the Internet, pray without ceasing.
