Passage: Proverbs 1:7-10*

7. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

8. Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.

9. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

10. My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them.

Question

What is grace, and do other people see it in your life?

Practical help

It's flat wrong to think that exercising biblical wisdom makes one unattractive and unpopular. Yet many people think obedience to Scripture is a one-way ticket to lonely, funless life.

Verse 9 above says, on the contrary, that wisdom makes you look good and helps you attract other people. Granted, different generations have different takes on what's attractive. One 18-year old dude we know, Christian through and through, has thrice pierced his head with little silver rings (both ears and an eyebrow). His godly parents only ask where they went wrong, but, actually, he looks kind of cool. Hip. Aware. Even wise.

Which is the point of verse 9. When we practice wisdom, we look smart, knowing, dependable. Attractive to our generation. Adorned by a graceful chain around the neck.

Yo, porn strugglers. Know that smut doesn't do squat to improve your personality, smarts or looks. It dumbs you down and makes you act like you've got something to hide (which you do). It scares people off.

So, fellow strugglers, put rings on your ears (at least figuratively). Let godly wisdom dress you up — and draw people to you.
