Passage: Luke 18:35-43*

35. As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.

36. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening.

37. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."

38. He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

39. Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

40. Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,

41. "What do you want me to do for you?" "Lord, I want to see," he replied.

42. Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed you."

43. Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

Questions

1. Why do you think the blind man was so determined that Jesus hear his plea?

2. Why do you think Jesus healed him?

Practical help

This passage is one of many that describe the compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ. He performs a miraculous healing by giving sight to a blind man.

Like so many of the things that Jesus did, he purposed this miracle to speak a many faceted message. What you can see in it depends on the angle from which you view it.

Looking at it straight on you can see the larger face -- Jesus is who he claimed to be, the son of God, because he did something only God could do.

Another prominent face is that of the blind man's faith. He must have heard about other miracles Jesus performed, and therefore sought his mercy. He believed Jesus had the power to heal his blindness.

One of the more subtle faces that Jesus is showing us is how much more the blind can see than those who are sighted. One of the main advantages this blind man had over the 'sighted' crowd is that he saw, so to speak, where he stood. Not just physically, but spiritually. His blindness was a hopeless condition -- one that he realized he couldn't change. This realization welled up in him a faith in the mercy of God.

Are you struggling with a pornography habit? Are you really seeing what you're seeing? Is there any real value in the short term thrills? Are the sights (sites) all they're cracked up to be? Do you see how hopeless you are without God?

Maybe it's time for a vision lesson from the blind. Close your eyes and see your real need for God's help (if you don't know how God helps, click here). Turn a little blind faith into seeing faith.
