Passage: Psalm 69:1-2, 33-36*

1. Save me, O God, For the waters have threatened my life.

2. I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me.

33. For the Lord hears the needy, And does not despise His who are prisoners.

34. Let heaven and earth praise Him, The seas and everything that moves in them.

35. For God will save Zion and build the cities of Judah, That they may dwell there and possess it.

36. And the descendants of His servants will inherit it, And those who love His name will dwell in it.

Questions

1. When David, the writer of this psalm, looks at is his problems, how does he describe them?

2. When you look at your problems, do you down-play them? Do you believe you can save yourself?

3. How strong is Davids confidence in Gods ability and willingness to save him?

4. How strong is your confidence that God will help you overcome pornography?

Practical help

This is a fantastic psalm and it would be worth your time to study it in more detail than we will here. I love the way it begins. "Save me, O God." It reminds me of Peter asking Jesus to allow him to walk to him on the water (Matthew 14:28-31).

Peter shouted to Jesus, "Lord, if it is You (because it was hard to see him at a distance), command me to come to You on the water." Jesus simply replies, "Come!" So Peter gets out of the boat and walks toward Jesus until he begins to look at his surroundings. Verse 30 says, "But seeing the wind, he became afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"

We sometimes think that it is more "spiritual" to pray long prayers, when in reality, it is better to see that the problem we face requires a simple, "Help, Lord!"

The truth is that pornography can destroy you in time.

Until we are ready to admit that we cannot save ourselves, God will permit us to take in water. He is not offering to "co-save" you. He is not asking to "partner" with you on your behalf. If you can fix yourself, you do not need Him. He will wait to hear your distress call.

Now the good news is that when you give up and turn to Him, He will move in to put your life back together. Note in verse 34 that even the seas praise Him. The very water that may be drowning you, is under His complete control.
