Passage: Colossians 3:3-5*

3. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

4. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

5. Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Questions

1. When did you die to your own way?

2. If you have not died, then does verse three have anything to do with you?

3. What do you think verse 4 means? How will Christ be revealed?

4. How does verse 5 contrast with strengthening your self control in order to improve yourself?

Practical help

When Jesus comes into your life at your invitation, He doesn't just come to keep you company. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, He makes Himself known to you in a number of different ways. You develop a thirst to know Him more. You desire to meet His friends. You loose your appetite for corrupting activities. It doesn't appear to happen immediately, but then, Adam and Eve didn't physically die immediately upon eating the forbidden fruit. If spiritual death can occur before physical death, then doesn't it stand to reason that spiritual life can grow in you even though your behavior lags behind and looks like that of an unbeliever?

If becoming a better person has only to do with trying harder, then you don't need Jesus. But if you have discovered that trying harder hasn't helped, then doesn't it makes sense to try taking God at His word? You have already died and therefore have been released from the power of sin including pornography. You have been hidden with Christ in God so you can never be snatched away. Someday, the person God had always designed you to be will be revealed in glory. That's the funny thing about God. He asks you to die to yourself, so He can give a better life back to you. It feels like you will loose so much at first, but you end up being the big winner in the deal.
