Passage: Proverbs 18:2*

A fool does not delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own mind.

Questions

Are you a good student? What makes a good student?

Practical help

Jesus took 12 men who were called "disciples" and trained them. A disciple is a student who looks to the teacher for instruction or wisdom. This is quite a bit different than much of education today where, often times, the student sets the agenda. At times we think we know enough to operate from our own understanding. Our "experience" seems to tell us that some things are OK and then we justify doing them. Take pornography for example. It seems harmless. You're just looking at a screen and enjoying yourself, right? What could be wrong with that? Actually, quite a bit.

This verse from Proverbs states that when we come up with wisdom from our own minds we are foolish. Why is this? Because our appetites deceive us and pull us so strongly toward personal pleasure that we give up knowing what is true. True wisdom, therefore, comes from a source outside ourselves. Here is a passage from Psalm 119. Reflect on in as you go through your day.

9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By keeping it according to Thy word. (The Bible)
10 With all my heart I have sought Thee;
Do not let me wander from Thy commandments.
11 Thy word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against Thee.
12 Blessed art Thou, O Lord;
Teach me Thy statutes.
13 With my lips I have told of
All the ordinances of Thy mouth.
14 I have rejoiced in the way of Thy testimonies,
As much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on Thy precepts,
And regard Thy ways.
16 I shall delight in Thy statutes;
I shall not forget Thy word.
