Passage: Romans 6:1-4*

1. What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace might increase?

2. May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

Questions

1. How long have you struggled with pornography?

2. What would a life free of pornography be like for you?

Practical help

Some people accept the gift of salvation thinking it only affects the future and not the present. Because it is impossible to save ourselves, the reasoning goes, God has to cover us and we are no longer responsible for the choices we make. If we make a mistake, all we have to do is say "sorry" to God and others, and everything is better.

But there are consequences to our choices and to continue to sin will ultimately result in death not necessarily a physical one, but certainly a spiritual one. By continually choosing to sin, we loose the savor for life -- this is a type of death.

This passage tells us that by identifying with Jesus, we have already died. At your conversion you became a brand spanking new creature who is no longer bound to live a sinful life. However, your freedom to choose has not been removed from you. Consider, though, that the choice to continue suffering with your addictions instead of allowing Jesus to live in you is a foolish and harmful one. It doesn't mean you wont stumble and fall (we all do) but that's no reason not to get back up and keep walking in newness of life. Close today's study by reflecting on the next three verses in Romans 6* because the truth they contain is fantastically liberating!

5. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection,

6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin;

7. for he who has died is freed from sin.
