Passage: Genesis 22:15-17*

15. The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time

16. and said, "I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

17. I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky."

Questions

1. Why did God promise to bless Abraham?

2. What kind of blessing did God promise?

3. How can you apply this lesson to your struggles against Web porn?

Practical help

The first rule of sales: Lead with the benefits. So I won't start by telling you to dump Web porn. Instead, check out what you'll get if you do.

Abraham's story suggests an answer. God had instructed him to sacrifice his only son. But moments before Abraham delivered the coup de grace, God stayed his hand. Then an angel spoke Genesis 22:15-17. In short, God promised to bless Abraham for exhibiting total commitment.

Apply this lesson to Web porn. If we make a commitment to give it up — a total commitment in our sexualized culture — wouldn't God also bless us? Granted, we might not get descendants "as numerous as stars in the sky," but we might wind up with something far better: the knowledge that we're a blessing to the Lord of the universe.

God asks for nothing more — and nothing less.
