Passage: John 21:2-4*

2. There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples.

3. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We will also come with you." They went out, and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing.

4. But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

Questions

1. This story takes place after Jesus was crucified and came back from the dead. Why is Peter fishing?

2. How do you think Peter and the others felt after catching nothing all night?

Practical help

Peter failed Jesus when he denied him three times before the crucifixion (John 18:25-28). Peter probably feared that this failure drove a permanent wedge between him and Jesus.

Do your visits to porn sites leave you fearing the same thing? And do you drown out this fear by submerging yourself in work — just as Peter did when he went fishing?
