Passage: Mark 14:12-16*
12. And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover [lamb] was being sacrificed, His disciples said to Him, "Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
13. And He sent two of His disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him;
14. and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is My guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"'
15. And he himself will show you a large upper room furnished [and] ready; and prepare for us there."
16. And the disciples went out, and came to the city, and found [it] just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
Question
What do you think it was like being one of Jesus’ disciples?
Practical help
Many well meaning Christians believe that the New Testament replaced the Old Testament. This is a simple idea that does not hold any weight when reading a passage like the one in today’s study. How can this passage be understood without understanding the Old Testament where concepts like the Passover are explained? If you don’t understand what this is about, I encourage you to take the time to look up “Passover” in your Bible’s concordance or in a Bible Commentary. It will be well worth your time.
What else can we learn from this passage? How about the fact that Jesus could instruct his disciples on what they should do based upon events that had not yet happened? Now the skeptic might reason that Jesus had orchestrated the meeting between His disciples and someone carrying a pitcher of water, but think about it. How many people in a city could be carrying a pitcher of water at any particular time? How could Jesus make sure that they bumped into the right man?
What is the implication for your life? Only that your future, although a mystery to you, is already known by God. He is not surprised or perplexed by your actions. Even when you surf for porn. He knows you with the same powerful knowledge that holds atoms and solar systems together. You are no more complex than everything else God manages. This however, does not mean you don’t have freedom to choose to obey God, because God’s control doesn’t negate your limited understanding. Somehow He wants you to choose to trust Him even though He already knows if you will or if you won’t.
Although these concepts seem strange, they are no stranger than the idea that a man named Jesus who died on a cross two thousand years ago did it for you. We are locked in time and God is not. Time to go. Make God proud and come back tomorrow.
