Passage: Luke 18:11-13*
11. "The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like all other men — robbers, evildoers, adulterers — or even like this tax collector.
12. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.'
13. But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner' ."
Questions
1. What do these verses tell us about how we believers should view ourselves?
2. How can that help us resist Web porn?
Practical help
Think you've put an end to your struggles with smut? Then beware!
As the passage from Luke shows, God prefers humble followers. Pride in our so-called moral accomplishments must rankle in the ears of the One who gave us the ability to succeed.
Moreover, pride may blind us to the danger that we thought we had overcome. Wary people rarely get surprised. Alcoholics Anonymous captures this truth in a simple statement: once a drunk, always a drunk. Likewise, we might say, once a porn addict, always a porn addict. So keep your defenses up and your pride down.
Finally, take another page from the AA handbook. Ask a few Christian friends to help you swear off Web porn — one day at a time.
