Passage: Romans 6:11*

In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Questions

1. What reason does this passage give to avoid sin?

2. How can it apply to pornography?

Practical help

Define "freedom."

As 21st-century Westerners, we would probably say, "The ability to do what we want." Unfortunately for us, the apostle Paul was not a 21-century Westerner.

For him, the definition is not freedom to do something but freedom from something — namely sin. Elsewhere in Romans, Paul argues that nonbelievers live in bondage to their sinful desires. Christians, however, do not. We're "free," see?

This reality creates a situation that certain philosophers would call the essence of existentialism: total responsibility arising from total free will. Romans 6:14 robs us of excuses. Since we died to sin, we have no reason to engage in it — unless we choose to do so.

Let's make our choices with porn good ones.
