Passage: Psalm 51:10-12*

10. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.

12. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Questions

1. Who can make a pure heart?

2. In Jesus, do we need to fear the loss of God's presence or Spirit?

3. According to Verse 12, what is our part in recovery from sin?

Practical help

In Verse 10, David asks for something to be created, and something else to be renewed. The idea of creation is different from renewal; the pure heart David is asking for is something new, something which didn't exist before, and which can't come from what existed before. Only God can create in this way. The steadfast spirit is something David brought to the table at the beginning, something that was lost along the way and can be renewed by God.

The shocking reality of David's sin brought him to the point of acknowledging that even though he was a man of great faith, his strong heart wasn't pure enough to sustain him in the face of temptation. As you face a struggle with a similar temptation, you would do well to pray this prayer, knowing that purity is God's doing and not your own. And remember God's promise that he will never leave you (Hebrews 13:5). All that is needed on your part is a willingness to follow him. Let him do the creating and renewing.
