strong in the face of sexual temptation.
Passage: Jeremiah 23:23,24*
23. "Am I only a God nearby," declares the Lord, "and
not a God far away?
24. Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?"
declares the Lord. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the Lord.
Questions
1. What is different about your computer room that makes you feel
free to explore inappropriate web sites?
2. Is the difference real, or just a perception?
3. Is it a distinction that God observes?
Practical help
Rhetorical questions are not necessarily intended to be answered,
but just to make us think. We all know the answers; otherwise they wouldn't be rhetorical.
Obviously God doesn't deal with walls and doors and other limitations that prevent him
from seeing what you're doing at any time. The rhetoric of this passage was intended to
make the listener or reader stop to consider who else is in the room. You're never alone.
We use the word "omnipresent" to describe God's ability to be everywhere at
once. I think this passage does it a lot better than a silly word made up by a college
professor somewhere.
Next time you're tempted to visit an illicit site, have some
consideration for the others in the room. Even if the room is empty of people but for you,
you're not truly hiding from God.
Also, if you've satisfied yourself that the room isn't empty, but
you still feel an empty place inside that needs to be filled with something, take note
that God not only fills heaven and earth, but he will fill every longing inside of you if
you ask him. The hardest part of this truth is that he might not respond in your timing.
This is because he's not only omnipresent, he's timeless. He rewards those who trust him.
