Practical help

When today's Christians want to escape the world, we read books, watch movies and head for the great outdoors. But hundreds of years ago, monasteries functioned as the best escape hatch for a secular culture. The desert fathers plunged deep into the wilderness to live in solitude and commune with God. While we may fault their inability to "live in the world but not of it," they certainly showed a level of commitment that now seems in short supply.

Maybe the desert fathers were onto something. If we want to avoid the evils of culture — namely Web porn — why not do it with monastic panache? A friend of mine does. After years of struggle with smut, he canceled his home Internet service. (Work was never a temptation; his company monitors Web use.) My friend says he has effectively sealed off a major source of temptation for good.

Maybe it's time for you to take drastic measures. Of course, eXXit will miss your eyeballs. But anything for the the cause.....
