Passage: 1 Corinthians 9:24-25*
24. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.
25. And everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
Questions
1. What is the difference between those who run the race and the one who wins the race?
2. Why do athletes train so hard and long?
3. What is our prize like?
Practical help
In a race there is a big difference between the way the winner runs and those who run just for the sake of competing in the race. The winner starts hard and finishes strong. The others eat his dust. This kind of strong running requires conditioning, endurance, strength and guts. Self-control is required in physical training, diet, rest and determination. Why does someone go through it all? They do it for the prize and for the victory, though temporary and fading at best.
In our own race of life, considering spiritual realities, many of the same qualities are required of us. It does make a difference how we run and how we train each day. Fortunately as Christians, our spiritual resources are sufficient for us to run the race well with the Lord’s help. We’re not running alone. The prize is future heavenly rewards and present earthly peace with God and others.
Pornography is an obstacle in the race and a hindrance to gaining the prize. Don’t settle for just running. Run to win today and leave Web porn in the dust. Lean on Jesus and you’ll start hard and finish strong.
