Practical help

A friend of mine once met with an older believer to learn more about following Christ. This older gentleman started their relationship with this question: "Are you dirty?"

The man wanted my friend to admit the filth he had stored up inside. Surely, he reasoned, there was plenty. And isn't flushing out your personal garbage what maturity in the Lord is all about?

The answer is no. At least John thinks so. He sees hopeful believers as pure, just as God is pure. Though John urges us to lead holy lives, he doesn't expect to find raw sewage under our personal manhole covers.

That means no matter how much porn you've seen or how depressed you feel about it, Christ has made you pure. The key, as John points out, is hope. Allow the triumph of the life of God to fill you with confidence — not in yourself, but in Christ's completed cleansing of you.

And if anyone asks you, "Are you dirty?" answer them truthfully: "Are you saying I need a shower?"
