This verse says God won't let you be tempted beyond what you can
handle.
Is this claim reliable?
Consider: The verse doesn't promise freedom from temptation, only
freedom from IRRESISTIBLE temptation.
Small consolation, since it's often hard to tell the difference.
Why? Resistible temptation can nonetheless persist, so much so that
it's easy to conclude, erroneously, that it has permanence and power. From that mistaken
logic, It's not much of a leap to believe such temptation is also irresistible. Thus some
smut strugglers believe that porn, because it is persistent, is also permanent and
powerful.
The verse above helps us know otherwise.
It reminds us that while some temptations (like smut) hang around
like company overstaying its welcome (and, as Benjamin Franklin would say, smelling like
dead fish), its permanence and power are illusory.
Believing this should give porn strugglers hope. Smut can be evicted
from their lives, since it is powerless and transient.
If you're such a struggler, claim this hope one temptation
and one day at a time. With God's help, you will someday quit porn.
