Passage: Psalm 105:1-7*

1. Oh give thanks to the Lord, call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples.

2. Sing to Him, sing praises to Him;
Speak of all His wonders.

3. Glory in His holy name;
Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad.

4. Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face continually.

5. Remember His wonders which He has done,
His marvels, and the judgments uttered by His mouth,

6. O seed of Abraham, His servant,
O sons of Jacob, His chosen ones!

7. He is the Lord our God;
His judgments are in all the earth.

Questions

1. Not all of the psalms are psalms of praise. But Psalm 105 is. For what does the psalmist say God's people should praise God?

2. If you were to read through the remainder of Psalm 105, you would find a recounting of God's great work on behalf of His people, Israel. What would you name as some of the great works He has done on your behalf?

Practical help

Theologians sometimes say that Scripture's aim is doxological. That is, Scripture records the wonderful works and words of God to prompt us to sing doxologies of praise to Him!

Psalm 105 tells the story of the choosing of Abraham, the confirmation of the covenant to Jacob, the exaltation of Joseph in Egypt, the growth of the nation in the womb of Egypt, the deliverance through Moses by means of the plagues and the parting of the Red Sea, the provisions of water and manna in the wilderness, and the capture of the land of Promise!

After recounting all that God has done for the nation, the psalmist ends with this (verse 45):

So that they might keep His statutes,
And observe His laws,
Praise the Lord [Hallelujah!]!

The result of remembering is doxology!
