Passage: John 13:3-10*

3. Jesus, ...

4. rose from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself about.

5. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

6. And so He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

7. Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you shall understand hereafter."

8. Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."

9. Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head."

10. Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."

Questions

1. Jesus washed His disciples’ feet? Doesn’t this seem sort of humiliating for a Master to do for His servants? What was Jesus demonstrating to His disciples when He washed their feet?

2. Why did Peter object to Jesus’ foot-washing?

3. After Peter’s objection, Jesus said that a total bathing was necessary and that periodic foot-washings would be required. What do you think He meant by these comments?

Practical help

When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, He was communicating the importance of servanthood. But He was also picturing forgiveness. The believer is the one who has taken a bath in Jesus’ forgiveness. If you have never experienced the joy of being forgiven, Jesus invites you to be cleansed by Him NOW. Put your trust in Him and you will be washed clean. (Click here for a fuller explanation of how to become a Christian).

After being forgiven, a Christian will occasionally get dirty again. Through foolishness or active rebellion, a Christian may sin. When that happens, as Jesus says, he needs to have his feet washed.

If you have tripped up recently and allowed pornography to become a part of your life, cleansing is only a foot-washing away. You are already forgiven (remember that “bath” you took when you trusted Christ?) But, to enjoy that forgiveness, you need Jesus to “wash your feet.” Go to Him in prayer, confess your involvement with porn, receive His cleansing - and go out with joy!
