Passage: Exodus 20:1-3* 1. Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2. "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3. "You shall have no other gods before Me." Questions 1. How much time should God take to help you?   2. Does God seem real to you?   Practical help Does a year seem like a long time to suffer "alienation" from your God? How about five? Or ten? Consider 400 years! That's how long the Israelites suffered at the hands of the Egyptians before "their" God decided to deliver them. If something is getting the best of you — like porn — how would you react to a God who doesn't seem to be there and who doesn't seem to want to help? Scripture doesn't say much of what happened in those 400 years. It wasn't that God didn't do things for His people — the rest of Scripture gives ample evidence of God's caring and loving nature — it's that God wanted us to have a different perspective on this part history. One possible perspective: He knows how we tick because He made us, so He knows that some will give up on Him after one year of silence; some after five; some after ten; and so on. After giving up on "their" God some would have sought deliverance from other gods. So for 400 years they got the chance to try other gods. What do we know — no other god lifted a finger to help them, because there they were — still Egyptian slaves. As agonizing as 400 years of waiting for the real God to deliver must have been, it can't compare to the eternity of the glorious point God made — the real God did deliver! Though today's passage is the first of God's ten commandments it's clear that it's more than a commandment. It's the evident conclusion of the rational thinker. Other gods don't deliver. The real God delivers. The God who can deliver you from the bondage of porn is this same real God.
