Passage: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10* from an account of the descendants of Judah: 9. Jabez was more honorable than his brothers. His mother had named him Jabez, saying, "I gave birth to him in pain." [Note: "Jabez" sounds like the Hebrew for pain.] 10. Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, "Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain." And God granted his request. Question If you were to compose a prayer for your life as Jabez did (verse 10 above), what would it say?   Practical help Jabez, from the passage above, knew about pain. Was it physical? Mental? Emotional? Sexual? The passage doesn't tell us what kind of pain, except that Jabez struggled with it for a long time, maybe from birth. No surprise that pain is mentioned even in the prayer for his life. We who experience the pain of porn — as victimizer or victim — would do well to fashion a lifelong prayer along Jabez' themes, requesting God's blessings and protection, invoking his presence, and pleading for deliverance from pain. Even sexual pain.
