Practical help

It’s discouraging to struggle with failures, isn’t it? And then to have a "do-gooder" like me write to you and say, "Cheer up, Rejoice," can be too much to take at times, unless…

Sometimes the answer to our Bible questions are right in the passage we are reading. How can I rejoice in the midst of sin and failure? The answer is, "in the Lord." God enables us to do the things He calls us to do. So if He has called us to rejoice, He will give us the power to do so.

I came across a wonderful statement on this very question, and it says it so well, I will simply pass it on to you. This comes from The Life of Joy and Peace, by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, page 386.

…let me show you how you can rejoice in the Lord even in failure, even in sin. Isn’t that a daring statement? No, "Rejoice in the Lord alway" — even when I have failed or sinned? Yes, in this way — if as a Christian I fall into sin, the Holy Spirit will convict me, and that will make me miserable. But if I am truly led of the Spirit I will not stop at that. I will go back to Christ, I will go back to Calvary’s hill, to the blood that was shed, the blood that still cleanses me, and as I go back I know I am washed and cleansed, and so I rejoice. If I am truly a Christian, if the Holy Spirit dwells within me, he must minister to my joy, and as I go back in contrition and shame, penitent and conscious of my unworthiness, his love is great enough to cover my sin and my failure. So I go back and I find it is greater than I thought it was. I have made a fresh discovery of his love and his mercy and compassion, and in my sin and failure I am made to rejoice all the same. Rejoice in the Lord always, in life, in death, in sins or failure, whatever may be happening to you, whatever your circumstances, "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."
