Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

The story of Samson (Judges 13-16) depicts the tragedy that can result from giving in to lust. Let us see what we can learn from his experience.

Passage: Judges 14:5-9 *

5 Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came as far as the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion came roaring toward him.

6 The Spirit of the LORD came upon him mightily, so that he tore him as one tears a young goat though he had nothing in his hand; but he did not tell his father or mother what he had done.

7 So he went down and talked to the woman; and she looked good to Samson.

8 When he returned later to take her, he turned aside to look at the carcass of the lion; and behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the body of the lion.

9 So he scraped the honey into his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey out of the body of the lion.

Questions

1. Does Samson's ability to kill a lion with his bare hands indicate the type of great things God wanted him to accomplish later?

2. As a nazirite (Judges 13:4,5), Samson had vowed not to touch any "unclean" thing, including the decaying bodies of dead people and animals. (See Numbers 6 for a description of the nazirite vow.) Do you suppose this is why Samson did not tell his parents where the honey came from?

3. Besides viewing Internet pornography, what else do you do that distracts you from God's plan for you life?

4. What could you do to focus on God's plan rather than on Internet pornography.

Practical help

Before becoming king, driving out the Philistines, or even defeating Goliath, David killed a lion single-handedly (1 Samuel 17:34-36). David completed the task of driving out the Philistines by focusing on God's plan. But even David allowed himself to be distracted by Bathsheba later in his reign. Samson was distracted from the very start, and was unable to finish the task of driving out the Philistines during his day.

(That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun. — Ecclesiastes 1:9). When you feel distracted by your temptation to view Internet pornography, or to commit any other sin, you have that much in common with both Samson and David. But think about those worthwhile endeavors you wrote down for yesterday's lesson. Focus on those things. This will help you have success — both in your tasks, and in avoiding Internet pornography.

For Tomorrow

Consider who you can call on to help you overcome an addiction to Internet pornography. Write down their names and telephone numbers (and keep them by your computer).
