Passage: Romans 8:26-27*

26. And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words;

27. and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Question

1. Are you encouraged when you read that the Spirit of God “helps our weakness”? What do you think that means?

 

2. Have you ever prayed that God would enable you to break a stranglehold of sin in your life, and not known how to pray to best effect?

 

Practical help

Most Christians have had the experience of knowing that someone, somewhere is praying for them. It is a tremendous blessing to know that a brother or sister in Christ cares enough to invest prayer time and energy in them. As encouraging as it is to know that another human being is praying for us, Romans 8 gives us even better news: God the Holy Spirit is praying for us!

No person knows exactly what God’s will is. The Spirit does. No person knows exactly how to pray, what to say to God. The Spirit does.

Christian, the next time you are tempted to wallow in porn - which you hate! - remember this: In your weakest moment, the Holy Spirit is praying for you - perfectly! His prayers on your behalf are passionate and true and effective. How can temptation to porn stand against the prayers of the Holy Spirit? It can’t! Stand on the truth that you are being prayed for by One who is mightier than the temptation confronting you.
