Passage: Romans 2:17-24*

17. Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and brag about your relationship to God;

18. if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law;

19. if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark,

20. an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth --

21. you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?

22. You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

23. You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?

24. As it is written: "God's name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

Questions

1. Are you in a position of teaching or authority over young people?

2. What do you teach or say to others about pornography?

3. Is your own walk consistent with what you teach?

Practical help

"Teens' sex video stirs fuss," read the headline from Middletown, Pa. It seems that three high school students were caught showing their video to fellow students and expelled. Two of them had had sex in the high school auditorium while the third filmed them.

We read such stories and are horrified. Yet, where do you suppose these kids got the idea? Is it not likely that they saw similar video clips on the Internet and thought, "hey, that would be cool if it were us!" ? What are we teaching? Kids learn their behavior not only by what we say, but by what they observe us doing. In fact, our actions are usually more powerful than our words.

The above passage from Romans should give us pause to think about our actions. If it weren't for the obsessive demand for porn, there would be no proliferation of it on the Internet. If it weren't there to be seen, maybe fewer young people would get the idea that sexual promiscuity and perversion are OK. If you or I are stuck in a porn habit, it is our habit in part that is fueling the downward spiral of morals. We have little ground upon which to be condemning "those people out there." Ultimately, we shouldn't worry so much about the spin of humanity as about the dishonor to God, as the last two verses point out.
