Passage: Ephesians 1:18-20*

18. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,

19. and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might

20. which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead, and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places....

Questions

1. What do you think it means for your heart to be enlightened?

2. What three things did Paul pray his Ephesian friends would know?

3. How do we know these things are true?

Practical help

The apostle Paul prayed that God would work to bring clear understanding to these believers in regard to their new position in Christ. Why? Because nothing carries more weight in the determination of our actions than our self-image. That is, the way we see ourselves and how we feel about ourselves. The truth about who we now are in Christ is life-changing and liberating. This is why Paul asked God to help the Ephesians to know and understand the hope of our calling in Christ, the richness of our inheritance in Him, and the surpassing greatness of His power working in us.

The fantasy life and deception of pornography darken the eyes of our heart and cloud our understanding of our true identity and self-image. We don’t see ourselves in light of who we truly are — God’s children, in Christ, saints.

Take a step back for a moment and allow your heart to see….

1. The hope of your calling. You can confidently expect that God will fulfill all His promises. (See 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.)

2. The rich inheritance you now have as a child of God. You don’t deserve to be a child of God, but by His grace you now are through faith in Jesus.

3. The same power that God exercised in raising Jesus from the dead is now at work in you. Nothing is impossible for God.

May you be strengthened in the inner man today as you walk in Christ.
