Passages: Luke 6:49*

"But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." — Jesus Christ

Questions

1. What does Jesus mean in this passage?

2. How does the message apply to us?

Practical help

After every major earthquake, you hear laments that the leveled buildings were not made to withstand serious seismic events. Why didn't the builders erect quality structures? At least one answer: the belief that "it will never happen here." But happen it does, all over the world and with stunning regularity.

Our defenses against Web porn often sound like hapless architects at the epicenter of a quake zone. "Sure, Internet smut brought down that parent, that pastor — even serial killer Ted Bundy. But not me."

Yeah, right. When Jesus says we need to put his words into practice, he doesn't want us to think that we're above temptation. He wants us to act.

There's a word for confidence in the absence of corroborating evidence: pride. And it always comes before the fall.
