Passage: Luke 4:1-4*

1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert,

2. where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

3. The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’

4. Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man does not live on bread alone.”’

Questions

1. What did the devil use to tempt Jesus?

2. How did Jesus ward off the temptation?

3. What can we learn from this passage about resisting pornography?

Practical help

This temptation was uniquely physical. Jesus was hungry, the devil said chow down.

To some degree all of us are sexually hungry. For proof, look to the multi-million dollar pornography industry. Unfortunately, porn is a dangerous way to meet our legitimate need, illusory in itself and often leading to worse forms of perversion.

Jesus’ response is instructive. Not only did He refuse the offer — “just say no” — He also used Scripture to back His resolve. Go and do likewise.
