Passage: John 15:11*

These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. — Jesus Christ

Questions

1. Where does joy come from?

2. How is joy different from pleasure?

Practical help

Joy comes from a relationship with Jesus. It is not something people can create by their own efforts. The Bible makes a distinction between joy and pleasure. The Greek word for pleasure is the word from which we get our word hedonism, the philosophy of self-centered pleasure seeking. A lot of human energy is directed to seeking happiness and pleasure. Abiding in Christ means to dwell and rest in His presence, full of His joy.

Porn use can’t bring any joy into your life. It may offer some temporary relief or pleasure, but it will never deliver a deep lasting sense of rightness or contentment. The lure of sin is deceiving. It promises much more than it can deliver. We are easily taken in by its apparent beauty, but after our little fling with smut is over, we just feel dirty and needy again.

Deep lasting joy can be yours. You don’t have to continue in the same depressing cycle of unfulfilling porn use. If you turn to Jesus to abide in Him, His joy will begin to permeate your heart.

What will you do today?
