19. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
20. you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

1. In this passage about sexual immorality, what reasons does Paul
give readers to abstain?
2. How could these reasons help you avoid pornography?
Practical help
First, note what the apostle Paul doesn’t say. There’s no
admonition to “buck up” or “pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.”
While that approach may be appropriate at times, in this passage, Paul does not counsel
self-improvement.
Next, consider the tack Paul does take. The core issue, he argues, comes down to identity.
To paraphrase: The Holy Spirit lives in you, so don’t drag Him through the mud; God
purchased you, so don’t squander His investment.
That price was the death of Christ. Dabbling with pornography cheapens the supreme gift
that brought us into the family of God. Instead, act like who — and Whose — you
are.
