Passage: Esther 4:14*

For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?"

Background — The book of Esther relates the story of the Jews’ deliverance from an evil plot devised against them by Haman, a court official of King Ahasuerus of the Persians. The events of Esther took place during the sixth century B.C. Esther’s book is unique among all the books in the Bible because of the absence of any reference to God, except for the oblique reference in 4:14 (above).

1. The Jews were facing annihilation at the hands of their enemies. The wicked Haman had devised a scheme to destroy all Jews throughout the Persian Empire because of a personal offence he had suffered. What does the verse above suggest to Esther about the reason she has attained royalty?

Practical help

The clock was ticking for the Jews in Esther’s day. The date had been set for the destruction of the people of God — and it wasn’t far off! If action was going to be taken to forestall destruction, it had to be taken quickly. Esther knew that if she was going to use her position as Queen to help her people, it was time for action now.
