Passage: Proverbs 6:27-28*

27. Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?

28. Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?

Questions

1. What is the message behind these proverbs?

2. What does it have to do with pornography?

Practical help

This one is almost too obvious. That’s why it’s so difficult.

The message? “Play with fire, and you'll get burned.” Simple to understand, hard to follow.

Consider pornography. We tell ourselves, “Soft-core porn never hurt anyone” or “What harm can a little bit of fun cause?” or “Everybody’s doing it.” And we go on watching.

Several years ago, Christian psychologist James Dobson interviewed a prisoner about his crimes. The convict confessed that his problems began with pornography, starting with soft-core and moving on to hard-core. Eventually, he acted out in real life what he had seen on-screen. Shortly after the interview, the prisoner was executed for his atrocities. His name was Ted Bundy.

While none of us may follow this example, the moment we view pornography of any kind, we’re walking in Bundy’s footsteps. And, as the Proverbs remind us, wrong steps lead to painful consequences.
