temptation.
Passage: 1 Corinthians 6:13*
"Food for the stomach and the stomach for food" - but God
will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and
the Lord for the body.
Question
The stomach seems to have but one function, what about the body -
what is it's purpose according to this passage?
Practical help
We love pithy sayings. They are easy to remember and are helpful -
assuming they are true. Sometimes, however, life is not as easy as our little sayings seem
to imply. From this passage, Paul has taken what was probably a common saying, "Food
for the stomach and the stomach for food," and analyzed how it can be misapplied.
If food is for the stomach and the stomach for food, then the implication is we can eat
whatever we want and there is no moral concern. If we extend this saying to describe other
"appetites" like sexual desire, then we can come up with a conclusion like,
"Sex is for the body, and the body is for sex." On the surface it might seem
logical, but Paul points out the flaw in his next statement, "The body is not meant
for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body."
This means that if we draw conclusions simply from what we think and
feel while looking at pornography on the Internet, we will miss the meaning for our
existence - now and in the future.
If you are a Christian, the Lord is always with you, in the most
intimate way possible. Sexual immorality harms your connection with Him. Don't
misunderstand me, it does not mean He will leave you because He says He will never do that
(Matthew 28:20). But it is very possible to walk in a darkness of your own making (1 John
1:6-2:10). Click here to look up passages on-line.
This passage, 1 Corinthians 6:13, might be a pithy, life-enhancing
verse to memorize and quote often.
