temptation.
Passage: Mark 2:20*
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.
Questions
1. Since Jesus identifies himself in this verse as the bridegroom, should today's believers be feasting or fasting?
2. How can we apply this insight to pornography?
Practical help
News flash: Self-denial is out.
From the glamorous music videos of hip-hop artists to the boats in driveways funded by home refinancing, American culture celebrates consumption. More, it depends on consumption; two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product comes from consumer spending. In this context, the concept of fasting sounds like so much nonsense from the Middle Ages.
Yet those medieval monks were onto something. In Mark 2:20, Jesus says that his followers should fast after he is taken away from them. Other passages in Scripture also support fasting. And no wonder: Fasting proves that you can put your primal desire for food under the submission of God.
See where this is going? By fasting from food you can cultivate the discipline needed to fast from impure expressions of your primal desire for sex in pornography. Self-denial is portable.
