Passage: Hebrews 4:12*

For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Questions

1. Verse 12 says the word of God (the Bible) is sharper than any two-edged sword. How are the results different when a sharp knife is wielded by a surgeon versus a criminal?

2. Why do you think God's word needs to be sharp and piercing?

Practical help

If you ask surgeons why a scalpel needs to be extremely sharp they'll tell you "the sharper the scalpel, the cleaner the cut" and "the cleaner the cut, the quicker it heals."

God's word is His "spiritual" scalpel. It cuts through tough outer shells to expose the inner condition of our hearts. It slices our hearts open to reveal our secret thoughts, motives and agendas. The deeper we let it penetrate, the cleaner it cuts.
