Passage: Psalm 10:2-4*
2. In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are
caught in the schemes he devises.
3. He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and
reviles the Lord.
4. In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts
there is no room for God.
Questions
1. What three characteristics of wicked men are evident in these
three verses?
2. Can he be thinking of God and acting this way at the same time?
3. If God is excluded from your thoughts when you are acting this
way, in what way can you act that will make room for God?
Practical help
It's pretty easy to apply these verses to the purveyors of
pornography, and to wail and whine about how we're victimized by them when we fall prey to
their evil schemes. That may be accurate, but it doesn't do us a whole lot of good. It's
better for us to apply them to ourselves, and to look at what it is in our own hearts that
allows us to exclude God from our thoughts.
Three adjectives describe a man whose thoughts are far from God: arrogant, boastful,
prideful. In this attitude it is difficult for us to cope with our sinful cravings: we
just let it flow, because we have become our own god. The adjectives that should describe
one who wants to follow God are different: meek, humble, repentant, submissive, wise,
kind, gentle. To be resistant to pornography, we must also be resistant to our desire to
take God's place.
