22. Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.

23. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

Practical help

How many parents have cringed at these emotion-filled words? They recognize the danger of basing major decisions on feelings — and the high divorce rate backs up their skepticism.

A similar emotionalism can plague Christians with Web porn problems. When we stumble, we often feel unworthy of God. Our prayers grow shorter, less frequent and may stop altogether.

Hebrews 10:22 mocks such self-pity. The writer asks us to trust reality more than feelings. God, he writes, has cleansed us from our guilty consciences. So we should "hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful" (v. 23).

Live out of the purity that Christ gave you. Anything else is nothing more than feelings.
