Passage: Colossians 2:13-14*
13. And when you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
14. having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.
Questions
1. According to this, what change has God performed in your life?
2. Which of your sins did God forgive now that you are in Christ?
3. What happened to the debt incurred because of your sin?
Practical help
Government stats tell us that the average American household today carries between $6,000 and $8,000 in credit card debt. Others of us are in far worse shape with creditors. As a result we have all seen the advertisements for those debt consolidation plans and organizations that offer to help individuals move toward debt free living. Maybe you can relate to the average American and maybe you have thought about how good it would feel to be debt free.
In a spiritual sense those who have believed in Jesus as their savior have become partakers of the best debt cancellation program in history. All of our sins have been forgiven in Christ because of His sacrifice on the cross for us. Not just the ones we committed in the past, but all of them — even the future ones — even the porn related sins that you may feel guilty about. The debt is gone and taken out of the way forever.
Let your heart be encouraged by this truth of full and complete forgiveness now in Christ. The joy and gratitude that you experience in living debt free will serve to strengthen you against the temptations to return to smut.
