Passage: Philippians
3:5-6,8*
5. circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe
of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee;
6. as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law,
found blameless.
8. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of
knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count
them but rubbish in order that I may gain Christ,
Questions
1. Verses 5 and 6 (above) list some of the things in which Paul had
taken pleasure and pride prior to being a Christian. What were those things?
2. In verse 8, he says that there is something he has discovered
that far exceeds the pleasure he used to derive from those things. What is that
"something"?
3. How does he now view those things he has left behind?
Practical help
Paul mentioned religious heritage and cultural pedigrees as
"garbage" he gladly walked away from when he became a Christian. He came to view
those things - because they got in the way of his gaining Christ - as garbage. Anything
that gets in the way of gaining Christ is "garbage." Is pornography one of those
things for you? A habit of viewing porn will get in the way of following and knowing
Christ. Better to call a spade a spade and be done with it. Pornographys value, in
comparison to the value of knowing Christ better and better, is the value of
yesterdays kitchen trash.
