Passage: Colossians 1:15*
And He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation.
Questions
1. If God is invisible, how do you know He’s there?
2. If you could see God at every moment, how would your life be different?
Practical help
Seeing is believing — so the saying goes. Many people claim to doubt the existence of God because they can’t see Him. The apostle Paul wrote about the foolishness of that reasoning to the Christians in Rome. No, we can’t see God, but we can see what He does and learn of Him from what He has made.
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. (Romans 1:20*)
Others, who believe and accept the truth of His invisible nature, see God as a cosmic policeman. For them, God is lurking in the shadows, occupied with watching for the next time someone gets out of line so He can dish out the just retribution for their misdeeds. They miss the point of His mercy and grace and the opportunity to know God as a loving Father.
So relax! I’m not trying to lay a guilt trip on you by telling you that God is watching over your shoulder every time you clink your way into porn’s grasp. On the contrary, guilt never motivated anyone to making lasting life change. Only God’s love and grace can do that.
Instead, I want to encourage you to remember that just because you can’t see God, that doesn’t mean He has left the building or something. He is always there, always present and always available to help. Be encouraged today by His constant presence. Even though you can’t see God now, He is there with you — not just to watch your every move like some cosmic policeman — but to guide and help in every moment and need as a loving Father.
Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:17*)
