Passage: John 9:1-3*

1. And as He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth.

2. And His disciples asked Him, saying, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind?"

3. Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was in order that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Questions

1. Why do you think the disciples asked Jesus the question in verse 2?

2. Do you ever ask yourself why you're prone to particular sins? Do you wonder why you're struggling with pornography?

Practical help

In Jesus' day it was common to explain a seemingly undeserved consequence or calamity as the result of "sins of the father". It just wasn't real easy to accept that a bad thing could happen to someone who "didn't deserve it".

Today it can be just as convenient to "pass the accountability" when you can't process the reason.

This logic could manifest itself in a besetting pornography habit. Try this -- I often get a sickening feeling shortly after a pornography experience; but that feeling isn't enough to change me. It's not strong enough to keep me from straying to the next porn site. I guess I'm just prone to this? It's inherited. What's the use?

Here's the use: Take hope from this passage.

It takes trust to understand why God won't let you know the "whys" and the "how comes". It takes courage to admit that even if you don't know the reasons you're doing it, (viewing pornography) you're still the one doing it! It takes faith to believe that you're struggle may be there -- in order that the works of God might (soon) be displayed in you.
