25. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked
him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
26. Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for
me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.
27. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to
eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his
seal of approval."
Questions
1. What was motivating the people who were looking for Jesus (verse
26)?
2. Are you in control of your appetites or are they in control of
you?
Practical help
Have you ever sat and thought about just how much power a physical
appetite wields in your life? At times it seems it can you drive you to do just about
anything -- so long as it gets satisfied.
Have you then thought about just how quick and easy it was to
satisfy?
The magnitude of its demand doesn't seem to jive with its
appeasement.
So can go a sexual appetite when its relegated solely to the
physical part of your being.
In setting today's passage Jesus had recently performed many signs
and wonders before crowds of people ending up with handing out a free lunch to all who
were there to see him. (The number was in excess of 5000; see John 6:1-14 for the story.)
Some of that crowd saw that quite a few free lunches could be had if they stuck close to
Jesus. So off they went in search of the Rabbi. When they finally caught up with Jesus, he
challenged them on the temporality of their appetite. Paraphrasing -- a free lunch only
lasts till dinner. Then what?
A quick surf to a porn site only lasts till the next wave of
appetite. Then what?
Jesus is offering you food for a deeper hunger. The hunger that
transcends mere physical appetites. The hunger that won't be satisfied with a free lunch
(or a free porno site). He's offering you a new food that satisfies for eternity. If you
