Passage: Psalm 51:1-4*

For the choir director.

A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

1. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness;
According to the greatness of Thy compassion blot out my transgressions.

2. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
And cleanse me from my sin.

3. For I know my transgressions,
And my sin is ever before me.

4. Against Thee, Thee only, I have sinned,
And done what is evil in Thy sight,
So that Thou art justified when Thou dost speak,
And blameless when Thou dost judge.

Questions

1. The intro lines to this psalm give us the context. When did David write this psalm?

2. In one word, what does David want from God (see verses 1-2)?

Practical help

David blew it! The godly King of Israel opened the door to temptation at a vulnerable point in his life and walked right over the threshold into sin. You can read the sad, sordid story in 2 Samuel 11. David lusted after a married woman named Bathsheba, took her by force, and had sex with her. Then, to cover up his involvement in her pregnancy, he had her husband, Uriah the Hittite, killed. Nearly a year passed between David's sin and Nathan's prophetic visit. When Nathan called a spade a spade, and identified David's actions as sin in the sight of God, David came to his senses and realized how wrong he had been.

His next action was to turn to God. How very unlike what we often do! Believing that God no longer wants anything to do with us after they fail, Christians are tempted to turn away from God. Nothing could be more wrong!

The moment we recognize that we have sinned, we should turn to God. He welcomes us and will grant what David asked — grace, blotting out our transgressions, cleansing — in short, forgiveness.

If you have failed recently in your battle to stay away from porn, take a cue from David. Don't delay. Run as fast as you can into the forgiving arms of God.
