Welcome
to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand
strong in the face of sexual temptation.
The patriarch Job is
famous for his patience. He endured trials and
continued to trust in God. Along the way he asserted
his righteousness, claiming that he didn't deserve the
treatment he was receiving from God. In chapter 31
(below), we listen in as he speaks about his
commitment to sexual purity.
Passage:
Job 31:1, 9-12*
1. "I Have made a covenant
with my eyes;.
How then could I gaze at a virgin?
9. "If my heart has been enticed
by a woman,
Or I have lurked at my neighbor's doorway,
10. May my wife grind for
another,
And let others kneel down over her.
11. "For that would be a lustful
crime;
Moreover, it would be an iniquity punishable by
judges.
12. "For it would be fire that
consumes to Abaddon,
And would uproot all my increase.
Questions
1. What does Job mean when
he says in verse 1 that he has "made a covenant" with
his eyes?
2. Based on what he says in
verses 9-12, would you say that Job views sexual sin
as a serious offense? What leads you to your
conclusion?
3. Why does Job use the image of
fire to describe the effects of sexual sin?
Practical
help
Talk about a hero for
eXXit readers! Job made a promise to not look
lustfully at a woman (verse 1), to not allow his heart
to be enticed by a woman, and to not linger at a
neighbor's doorway. Job never even mentions engaging
in sexual intercourse with another woman. Knowing the
destruction sexual sin brings (it is a fire; it robs a
person of life's substance), he determined to stay as
far away from it as possible.
Job points the way to purity by
his demonstration of godly wisdom. Those of us who
want to stay pure in 2003 will take Job's commitments
to heart by not looking lustfully at women (or men) on
the Internet, will guard our hearts so that we will
not be sexually enticed by a person to whom we are not
married, and will not linger at Web sites that tempt
and play to our sexual urges. If you don't want to get
burned by sexual sin, stay away from the
fire!
