Welcome to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

For the first several days of April 2001, the eXXit studies will zero in on the experiences of the Old Testament prophet, Jonah. Hope you enjoy and find these studies helpful as you seek to stand strong in the face of sexual temptation.

Passage: Jonah 3:4-10*

4. Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown."

5. Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them.

6. When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the ashes.

7. And he issued a proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.

8. "But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in his hands.

9. "Who knows, God may turn and relent, and withdraw His burning anger so that we shall not perish?"

10. When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it.

Questions

1. How many words made up Jonah’s sermon (verse 4)?

2. What was the response of the Ninevites to Jonah’s sermon?

3. What did God do when He saw Nineveh’s response?

Practical help

Many people read the book of Jonah and get excited about the miracle of the fish/whale that swallowed the prophet. That’s OK, but they miss the best miracle of the book — the salvation of the Ninevites!

There is nothing more exciting or God-glorifying than a changed life. And what was it that prompted the Ninevites to turn their lives around? It was the living, breathing word of God!

Even when delivered by a grudging prophet like Jonah, the word of God has power to change lives. Think about the power available to you when you open up the Bible, which is the word of God, and read, not grudgingly, but with expectation and eagerness and willingness to change. For freedom from the trap of porn you can do no better than to pay attention to Scripture and receive it, "not as the word of man, but for what it really is, the word of God which also performs its work in you who believe" (1 Thessalonians 2:13).
