Welcome
to eXXit, the web site designed to help you stand
strong in the face of sexual temptation.
The
following is one of 42 studies on the "armor of God"
as it relates to resisting Web porn. Some of the
studies will examine Ephesians chapter six, which is
famous for the armor theme. Some of the other studies,
however, will examine how the armor pieces are
discussed elsewhere in Scripture. All 42 studies are
listed in the three-minute
study index
for the dates April 1 through May 12, 1999. Feel free
to study and/or download the entire set.
We
welcome your feedback to this thematic approach in the
three-minute
studies.
Passage:
Joshua 24:14*
Now, therefore,
fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth;
and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond
the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
Questions
1. In Joshua 24, Joshua is
urging Gods people to serve God in a certain
way. What is to characterize their service to
God?
2. As they serve God in this new
way, they are challenged to stop serving something
else they had been serving. What is that?
3. When had they served this
"something else"?
Practical
help
When Joshua spoke to
Gods people, they were living in the Promised
Land. In fact, they had been living there for some
time. Yet he still needed to give them the challenge
to stop serving (literally "worshiping") the gods they
had formerly served. Those other gods were false gods.
The Jews had looked to these gods for their
fulfillment as opposed to the true
God.
A "god" is anything we look to
for life. Many men involve themselves
with pornography in hopes that the fleeting pleasure
it brings will give them a measure of
life. However, porn is a false god.
It cant satisfy. It is artificial, removed,
non-relational and manipulative - everything the true
God is not.
The challenge of Joshua 24:14 is
not an invitation to give up the life
offered by false gods for the life
offered by the true God. It is an invitation to
abandon the death that the false god
actually delivers and enter into the
life that comes when we serve the
true God.
