Passage: Judges 8:28-32*

28. So Midian was subdued before the sons of Israel, and they did not lift up their heads anymore. And the land was undisturbed for forty years in the days of Gideon.

29. Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.

30. Now Gideon had seventy sons who were his direct descendants, for he had many wives.

31. And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

32. And Gideon the son of Joash died at a ripe old age and was buried in the tomb of his father Joash, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Questions

1. Are you afraid of meaningful relationship?

2. Are you using porn as some kind of twisted placebo for something that really ails you?

Practical help

In today's passage from Judges we see a excerpt from the story of Gideon (also called Jerubbaal) who was man of great victory on the battlefield. But what about the home field?

Try and imagine yourself as having a choice of one of 35 sexual partners at any particular moment the urge strikes you. That's probably what Gideon had to choose from if we assume each of his wives bore him approximately 2 sons and 2 daughters.

What was it that made Gideon feel he needed that many wives? Did he feel his stature in the bedroom had to equal his stature in the war room? Did he have something he needed to achieve, sexually, to be acceptable to himself? With one of 35 wives to choose from for sexual gratification, how could he possibly need sex with a concubine?

Today this is just food for thought — what are you trying to avoid by seeking the "concubine" of pornography?
