Passages:
Luke
23:44-47*
44. It was now about the sixth
hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until the
ninth hour, 45. because the sun was obscured; and the
veil of the temple was torn in two. 46. And Jesus,
crying out with a loud voice, said, "Father, INTO YOUR
HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT." Having said this, He
breathed His last. 47. Now when the centurion saw what
had happened, he began praising God, saying,
"Certainly this man was innocent."
John
19:30*
Therefore when Jesus had
received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And
He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
Question
What is so good about this
Friday?
Practical
help
With the popularity of Mel
Gibson's film "The Passion of the Christ," Holy Week
is taking on a new vividness for many of us.
I am hearing (or overhearing)
many conversations talking about the impact of the
movie and wondering if the historical events were
really like that. I'm also hearing this comment more
frequently than usual: "Why do they call it 'Good
Friday'? I mean, look what happened to
Jesus."
Precisely!
Today is a day to remember (or
discover, click
here for more info)
that what happened to an innocent Jesus was a
horrible, tortuous and undeserved death. This seems
like a really bad thing to happen until we also
realize that Jesus was "taking the bullet" for
us.
Every time we click to that porn
site and subsequently corrupt God's good gift of
sexual intimacy, we incur the debt of God's wrath.
That's a debt that has to be paid. That's a
debt that was paid! He died so we could live.
It doesn't get any better than that! It is a Good
Friday.
