Passage: Mark 8:14-21*

14. Now the disciples[1] had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat.

15. Then He charged them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."

16. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have no bread."

17. But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, "Why do you reason because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart still[2] hardened?

18. Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember?

19. When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?" They said to Him, "Twelve."

20. "Also, when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?" And they said, "Seven."

21. So He said to them, "How is it you do not understand?"

Questions

1. Do you know that Jesus loves you?

2. If you know this, how do you know it? What are your proofs?

3. In spite of knowing that Jesus loves you, and having proofs, do you still struggle with knowing it is still true? (Perhaps Jesus would have to say to you what he said in verse 21 above.)

Practical help

This story reminds me of one of my favorite love songs. I bet you have heard it.
1. Jesus loves me! this I know, For the Bible tells me so; Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong.

When the disciples didn’t know what Jesus was talking about, did they ask him for clarification? No, they began to discuss the problem among themselves. How ironic to have Jesus sitting there watching them go through this childish interaction. Yet, how often do we go looking for answers to our confusions about life in some silly place or book rather than praying to the One who knows the answers we seek? Could it be that we just don’t believe he loves us?

2. Jesus loves me! He who died Heaven’s gates to open wide! He will wash away my sin, Let His little child come in.

Jesus will do more to prove his love to these disciples than reproducing bread for lunch time. He will become The Bread of Life for them. He will allow his body to be broken just like a piece of bread in order to give them entrance into the eternal home he has prepared for them. This also applies to you and me.

3. Jesus loves me! loves me still, Tho’ I’m very weak and ill; From His shining throne on high, Comes to watch me where I lie.

If you are weak in a debilitating addiction to pornography or other sexual sin, know Jesus’ love for you is unchanged. Celebrate today as you live in this reality. Ask for help from the One who is strong enough to set you free.

4. Jesus loves me! He will stay Close beside me all the way; If I love Him, when I die He will take me home on high.

Chorus: Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so.
